A cool front dropped temperatures into the 70s this morning (a nice change from the 110 heat index we had earlier this week), so we decided to take advantage of the nice weather while we could. We drove up to Surry to pick blueberries at College Run Farms.
Charlotte isn’t quite old enough to figure out the art of picking blueberries yet, but I gave Trenton a container, told him to only pick the blue ones, and let him go.
And he (and his sister) tried to go all the way to the corn field!
Once I got the kids back a little closer to where I was, we got to work picking…and eating…
After Trenton tried a few berries, I told him that the rest had to go in his container, and he could eat more after we got home and washed them off.
I had given Charlotte a couple of blueberries to try. Big mistake. I looked over from where I was picking, and saw this:
She is sticking a branch in her mouth to try to eat a cluster of not-yet-ripe blueberries straight off the plant!
While keeping a hawk eye on her, Trenton and I were able to pick about a quart of blueberries between the two of us. I kept hearing Trenton say, “Only pick blue ones.” to himself over and over. It did the trick because I didn’t have to throw out any of the ones that he picked!
We had a great time picking blueberries this morning. Trenton kept me laughing the whole time. He can’t say blueberry correctly. It comes out as “boobie.” So this is some of what I heard this morning:
“I love boobies!”
”Mmmm, mmmm, good boobie!”
”Wow! Mommy have lots of boobies!”
”I find big boobie!”
”Don’t squish boobie!”
I am so glad I’ll have this blog to look back on when he’s older so I can embarrass him!
We got home right around lunch time, so the kids had to have blueberries with their food. After such an eventful morning, they took great naps and were ready to make a cake with their blueberries once they woke up.
We made a blueberry lemon dump cake. Only four ingredients and super easy to make!
The kids loved that we were making something with the blueberries that they picked and camped out in front of the oven watching the cake bake.
The cake finished baking just about the time the kids were finishing up their dinner, so they were excited to get to eat some of this gooey goodness. So was Mommy!
The cake was great! The three of us ate almost half of it tonight! Now we have to figure out what to make with the rest of our blueberries!
Blueberry Lemon Dump Cake
2 cups blueberries
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 pkg. lemon cake mix
1/2 cup butter
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Mix blueberries and sugar together in 8x8 pan.
Pour dry cake mix over berries.
Cut butter into pieces and arrange on top of cake mix.
Bake for 35-40 minutes or until lightly browned.
