What a Day!

Wow!  What a day today has been!

Both kids slept pretty good, and we were up, full of breakfast food, and ready to get out the door to Wal-Mart by 8:30.  I thought this would be the hardest part of my day.  I don’t really like going to Wal-Mart on a normal day, but I was sure that lugging two kids with me on a busy Saturday morning was not going to turn out good.  I was pleasantly surprised though.  We beat the weekend crowd to Wal-Mart, and the kids were really good.

We got back home, got our loot unloaded, and the kids started playing with their toys.  While they were occupied, I decided to run upstairs to grab my laptop and bring it downstairs to catch up on email.

That’s when the day took a turn for the worse.

I tripped coming down the stairs.  Crash!  The computer hit the floor.  Uh oh!

On the bright side, at least it was a computer I dropped and not a kid!

I brought the computer in the living room, opened it up, and powered it up.  It came on, but the screen was shattered.

Best Buy here we come!

I bought the extended Geek Squad warranty when I purchased the computer, so I knew whatever was wrong with it should be covered.

I loaded the kids back up in the car, and we were off to Best Buy.

Problem was, Best Buy wasn’t open yet.

Oh well, Once Upon a Child, one of my favorite stores is right across the street, and it was open.

We killed a little time, and then headed back to Best Buy.  We got there right as they opened, so thankfully the Geek Squad line wasn’t long.  It still took over 30 minutes for me to get checked in to get the computer sent off to be fixed.  The tech said that as far as he could tell, the only issue was the shattered screen.  There could be more problems, but we wouldn’t know that until someone took a more thorough look at it.  I could expect to get my computer back in 3-6 weeks.

I had the kids in a Geek Squad car shopping cart.  It kept them occupied for all of about 5 minutes.  Then they got sippy cups.  Then a magna doodle.  Then they managed to squirm out of the seat belts and try to climb out of the cart.  Ughhh!

I was very happy to be done with Best Buy for the day, but I needed something sweet (and a snack for the kids to keep them at least somewhat quiet on the drive home).  I thought about Starbucks, but it was far too hot for that.  There was a McDonald’s right around the corner, so I decided to get a chocolate shake for me and a chocolate chip cookie for the kids.

I ordered our food, and I was informed that they were out of ice cream.  At 10:45 in the morning.  The kids got their cookie, and I was left without a milkshake.

Oh well, there’s a Chick-fil-A on the way home.  I like their milkshakes better than McDonald’s anyway.

I pull into Chick-fil-A pumped about a yummy oreo shake.

Dang it!  There is a line of at least eight cars!

Well, I’ll just have to order a margarita with lunch!

Our friend Keri was driving down from D.C. to go visit her son in North Carolina.  She was going to take a detour to come meet the kids and me for lunch.

After we get home, the kids are playing and being cute.  I go to grab my camera to snap some pictures.

Crap!  The card isn’t in my camera.  I left it in the broken computer that I just dropped off at Best Buy!

I called Best Buy, and they found the card and told me they would hold on to it.  Looks like we’ll be making another trip to Best Buy sometime soon.

Keri calls around 11:15.  She is still 45 miles north of Richmond stuck in traffic.  Since she’s lost so much time in traffic, she is going to drive straight to see her son and will meet up with us on Tuesday on her way back to D.C.

I’m looking forward to seeing Keri on Tuesday, but man I was needing a margarita!

Next I go to grab our old backup laptop.  It is 5 1/2 years old and pretty slow, but it can make it through the next 3-6 weeks.

I open up the drawer where we keep it, and it’s not there.

Where could it be?

Jarrod uses it from time to time, so I ran upstairs to look in his dresser.  I couldn’t find it anywhere.  I pulled out my phone and emailed Jarrod.  (I had already emailed him telling him about the computer incident.)

“Where is the old laptop?  It’s not in the drawer where we normally keep it.  I looked in the bedroom too.  Where else could it be?  You don’t have your laptop PLUS the old laptop with you, do you?”

By now it was time for lunch.  I got the kids fed, and Charlotte had a blowout diaper while eating.

Clean up on aisle 4!

FINALLY it was naptime!  I took Charlotte upstairs, and 30 minutes later, she was still crying.

I bit the bullet and took Trenton upstairs, put him down, and went and grabbed Charlotte.  Charlotte and I came back downstairs to try to catch a nap on the couch.

We had been asleep about 20 minutes when my phone started vibrating.  I recognized the number as one that Jarrod calls from.

{Whispering} “Hello.”
”Hi, Jenny.”
”Did you get my emails?”
”Yes, and I didn’t want to answer.  I have the old laptop.”
”What!!!” {A little too loud} “shhh, shhh, shhh”
”The CD/DVD drive on my laptop is broken, so I brought the old one along too so I could watch DVDs.”
”I see.” (Again Charlotte starts squirming.  Jarrod is getting off easy.)  “Just email me back.  I gotta go.  Bye.  I love you”
”Bye.  I love you too.  Sorry.”

Jarrod emails me back again apologizing for taking the backup laptop.

Now we do have a desktop, but the thing is really old (in computer age) and a pretty big pain in the butt.  We haven’t used it in 2 years.  The wireless doesn’t work on it, so getting on the internet is hard since our modem and router are upstairs and the desktop is downstairs.  The only reason I haven’t gotten rid of the thing is because I haven’t finished taking all of my old files off of it.

Anyway, Jarrod tells me to just go back to Best Buy and buy a new (cheap model) computer to have as a backup.  Not to even mess with the headache known as the desktop computer.

Okie dokie.

I’m not looking forward to taking the kids back to Best Buy, nor am I looking forward to dropping the money on a new computer, but I am looking forward to not having to be without a computer the next 3-6 weeks.

The kids wake up from naptime pretty happy.  They have snacks, play a while, and then we head upstairs for an early bath time.  After baths, they play some more, and then we come downstairs for a quick dinner.

We’re heading out the door after dinner, and Trenton asks where we’re going.

“We have to go back to the computer store.  I have to get the card so that I can take pictures, and we’re going to get a new computer.”
”I good, get cookie at McDonald’s"?”
”Sure, if you are good at the computer store, you can get a cookie at McDonald’s.”

Why don’t I bribe this kid more often?  He and his sister were little angels at the store!  I got my camera card and bought a new computer without any trouble.

Trenton and Charlotte were happy to have cookies for a second time today.  And this time, McDonald’s had ice cream!  Not as good as a margarita, but not too shabby.

It was almost bedtime for the kids by the time we got home.  They played a while, we read some books, and then I put them down for the night.

I got this new computer set up and working, and then made a yummy looking dessert to take to a cookout tomorrow (where I WILL have a margarita!).

Now it’s time to hit the sack….and pray that tomorrow isn’t quite as eventful as today!
