Take a look at this fun colored spaghetti that we played with this afternoon! I found this idea on my new favorite website, Pinterest. If you haven’t checked the website out yet, you should. It’s awesome!
Anyway, while the kids were eating their afternoon snacks, I cooked up a batch of spaghetti. Once it was finished cooking I drained it and tossed it with some oil. I then separated the spaghetti into four different bowls and colored it with food coloring. I tossed it all in a rubbermaid container, and we headed outside to play.
Trenton was a little cautious about the spaghetti at first.
I brought a couple sheets of paper outside in hopes of doing some spaghetti painting. Apparently I tossed a little too much oil in with the spaghetti because only oil came off on the paper. Trenton didn’t seem to mind and kept throwing the spaghetti onto the paper. Bailey liked it too!
*An unexpected benefit of adding too much oil to the spaghetti was that no one ended up with stained hands!*
It wasn’t long before Charlotte wanted to know what was going on. She was not at all interested in playing with the spaghetti. She just wanted to shove it in her mouth as fast as she could!
After seeing Charlotte scarfing the spaghetti down, Trenton decided to try it too.
He touched the noodle to his mouth and then decided against eating it. Trenton doesn’t eat any pasta (a sensory issue), so I was just happy that he was playing with the spaghetti and touched it to his mouth. Little did he know that today’s playtime was also a sensory activity!
We will definitely be playing with spaghetti again! I’m just hoping that this doesn’t translate into bad manners at dinner time!

i Love your little Charlotte!!
I like that idea. It seems a lot cleaner than sand or water! I might have to use this with my LO as he gets older. Thanks for the idea.

How fun! I like that it doesn't look like it's staining their hands and faces - I'm all for mess, but always feel bad when I am the mom with kids walking around with blue, purple and green mugs :-) Thanks for sharing!
I just love this, thanks for sharing at Happy Hour!
Cool! The spaghetti painting looks like so much fun - your noodles turned out to nice and bright!
How fun! I saw your link on the delicate construction linky party.
Yes, Pinterest is great. How wonderful that your son was willing to touch the noodles and put them up to his mouth!
haha, that Pinterest link is to my rainbow spaghetti post! Glad you were inspired and enjoyed it! Yours looks very colourful
Thanks for all of the great comments! Trenton has already been asking to play with spaghetti again! And Anna - thanks for the fun idea!
For the oil, did you use vegetable oil or like crisco oil and how much did you use?
I used vegetable oil. I didn't measure, but it was probably 1 1/2 - 2 Tbsp.
