DIY Microwave Puffy Paint

It’s a beautiful day outside, but Charlotte has been running a fever off and on since yesterday, and I woke up feeling like I’d been hit by a freight train (darn sinuses!).  Needless to say, I don’t see us venturing out today.

*Jarrod is back out at sea, so it’s just the kids, the dog, and me for a few days.*

I found this DIY puffy paint at One Crafty Mumma, and since it looked fun, easy, and I have self-rising flour that I need to use up before our move, we decided to give it a shot.

For each bowl of paint that you want to make, mix 1 tablespoon self-rising flour, 1 tablespoon salt, a few drops of food coloring, and just enough water to make a smooth paste.

The kids painted on a cream of wheat box using cotton swabs.

Stick the paintings in the microwave for 30 seconds.  Viola!  You’ve got a puffy paint masterpiece!

The kids thought it was really neat that the paint grew, dried, and hardened!  They have been wanting to touch their paintings every five minutes since we finished them.

Oh, and Mommy had to get in on the fun for this project too!

Sweetened Condensed Milk Finger Paints

Not that I want to teach my kids that it’s okay to eat paint, but I could (and did) eat this paint with a spoon!

I found this fantastic activity over at Enjoying the Journey.  Not only is it super easy and fun, it is also a wonderful sensory exercise.

I split a can of sweetened condensed milk between four bowls and added food coloring to each.  The kids mixed the colored milk up and then got to painting.

The kids loved this!  Want to know who else loved it? (Other than Mommy who took a couple of licks)  The dog!  Trenton was really good about keeping his mess contained to the table, but Charlotte got a few drops of the edible paint on the floor.  Bailey had it cleaned up in no time!

Falling Into Place

Things really seem to be falling into place concerning our move.

We have renters lined up to rent our house here in Virginia!  With the way that the housing market is, we are thankful to have found renters so quickly.

We are going to live in base housing in Monterey.  We got on the waiting list as soon as Jarrod got his orders because we heard that it can take quite some time to get into housing.  Thankfully, there is a house opening up just as we are set to be arriving in the area, and it is being held for us.

Our house won’t be very far from Naval Postgraduate School, and Jarrod is planning to bike or run into school every day.  While we lived in Guam, Jarrod did the same thing, and we got by with just one vehicle.  So, we are going to try doing the same thing in California.  We traded in both of our vehicles and got a larger SUV.  The #1 thing I wanted in a new vehicle? (Behind safety, of course)  A DVD player for the kids.  I do want to make it across the country with a little bit of my sanity still intact!

I may not feel that all is right in the moving world in a little over a week when the packers/movers are actually here handling all of our things, but for now, this move is going pretty dang smooth!

Snowflake Tortilla Snacks

We’ve had snow every year we’ve lived in Virginia, but I don’t know that we’ll get any snow this year – at least not before we move in a few weeks.

Since it doesn’t look like we’re going to see any snow on the ground this year, Trenton made his own snowflakes this afternoon.

I found the recipe for these tortilla snowflakes in a Disney Family Fun cookbook that the kids got for Christmas from our neighbors.

- Microwave tortillas for 15 seconds.
- Fold tortillas in half and in half again.
- Cut into snowflake shapes as you would a paper snowflake.

- Place “snowflakes” on a cookie sheet, brush the tops with vegetable oil, and bake at 400 degrees for 4-6 minutes or until crisp and lightly browned.
- Sift powdered sugar onto warm snowflakes and sprinkle with blue sugar crystals.

This little one enjoyed his snowflake!  Yum!

A Gymtastic 3rd Birthday Party!

We had Trenton’s birthday party yesterday at the local MyGym.  Trenton and Charlotte both started taking classes here with Jarrod after he returned home from deployment, and Trenton was so excited to have a birthday party at gymnastics!

The kids had free play time mixed with a few structured games, songs, and activities.

When we were planning Trenton’s party, it took Trenton no time to decide that he wanted a train themed birthday cake.  The folks at MyGym called a few days before to the party to get a final head count, and they also asked what the party theme was.  It just so happened that they had a really cool train at the gym that Trenton got to ride on to lead a parade before birthday cake time.  Trenton thought that the train ride was the best thing ever!

Thank you MyGym for the wonderful party!  And thank you to all of our great friends for making Trenton’s birthday so special!

Happy 3rd Birthday, Trenton!

Wow!  It’s hard to believe that it was just three years ago that God blessed us with a beautiful baby boy.  He has been such a blessing to us.

Trenton weighs 34 pounds and is 36 1/2 inches tall.  He is ALL boy, and loves to run and be loud.  Anything with wheels is an instant favorite with this kid.  On the flipside though, he loves sitting down and reading books, putting together puzzles (he is up to 50-piece puzzles), building things with blocks, and figuring out how things work.  Trenton loves his little sister, but they do get into it sometimes.  They always seem to want the same toys at the exact same time!

We are having Trenton’s birthday party on Saturday, but we got a cookie cake for him today and let him open a few gifts.  Boy was he in heaven!

If you are on Pinterest, you may have seen the birthday questionnaires that have been passed around.  I quizzed Trenton tonight, and below are his answers.  I plan on asking him the same questions every year on his birthday (and start with Charlotte on her third birthday).

What is your favorite color?  Green
What is your favorite toy?  Remote Control Dump Truck (a toy he opened less than an hour before I asked the question)
What is your favorite fruit?  Bananas
What is your favorite TV Show?  Team Umizoomi
What is your favorite thing to eat for lunch?  Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwiches and Strawberries
What is your favorite outfit?  Pajamas
What is your favorite game?  T-Ball
What is your favorite snack?  Cheetos
What is your favorite animal?  Lion
What is your favorite book?  Ducks in Muck (he has this book in bed with him and reads it during “quiet” time in the afternoon)
Who is your best friend?  Shawn
What is your favorite cereal?  Alphabets (Since I can’t find the cereal here in Virginia, Alphabets is one of the biggest things Trenton looks forward to when we go to Texas.)
What is your favorite thing to do outside?  Run
What is your favorite drink?  Blueberry Juice (V8 V-Fusion)
What is your favorite holiday?  Christmas
What do you like to take to bed with you at night?  Books
What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?  Cereal
What do you want to eat for dinner on your birthday?  Birthday Cake
What do you want to be when you grow up?  Train Conductor

What joy Trenton has brought to our lives!  I wake up every morning wondering what this little boy is going to come up with.  He brings so much laughter to this house.  Jarrod and I love watching him grow and learn new things.  Trenton never ceases to amaze us, and we love him more each and every day!

A New Adventure

So, where have we been the past few weeks?  Busy!  We are about to start a new adventure, and we have been gearing up for it.

Jarrod found out in the fall while he was still deployed with the ship, that he would be rotating much sooner than expected.  Our original rotation date was December 2012, but instead, we are moving in less than a month to Monterey, California.  Jarrod will be a graduate student in the Operations Research program at Naval Postgraduate School.  We are extremely sad to be leaving such wonderful friends here in Virginia, but we are really looking forward to this new chapter (that will have Jarrod at home a lot more than he has been the past few years).

I’m hoping to have more good news about our move to report here soon!
