Earlier this week, on my way to pick Trenton up from preschool, I saw a few families riding in surreys along the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreational Trail. It looked like a lot of fun, so I did some research, and managed to talk Jarrod into renting one.
Since today was such a gorgeous day, we went down to Cannery Row after leaving the Pancake Breakfast in Bunnyland. Jarrod and I told the kids that we were going to ride a big bike, but they didn’t know exactly what we were talking about until we walked up to Bay Bikes and saw the surreys lined up outside. Boy were they excited! They picked out exactly which one they wanted to ride while Jarrod got everything set up for our rental. I grabbed helmets for the kids, and it was time to go. Neither kid mined being strapped into the front basket, but Charlotte sure did make a stink about having to put her helmet on. The shop employee told us that this was pretty normal for kids her age, and that most kids calm down once they get on the trail. He was right; as soon as we got going Charlotte calmed down.
We rode up the trail toward Pacific Grove and Lovers Point. There were a few slight inclines, but overall the 2 1/2 mile round-trip ride was pretty easy. Jarrod had the wheel that actually worked; my steering wheel was just for looks. He also had the brake. I did do my fair share of pedaling though! The views along the trail were awesome, and we even ran into some more harbor seals.
Trenton was a little upset that we were only borrowing the surrey and we couldn’t take it home with us. He quickly got over this though and decided to add it on to his ever-growing list for Santa. We’ll see if Santa’s elves know how to make surreys!
