Visiting Alcatraz has been on my bucket list ever since we found out we were moving to Monterey.
And yesterday we drove up to San Francisco to tour the former federal prison.
After a short boat ride, we were let off on The Rock. It was like stepping back in time.
We took our time walking up to the cellhouse which was equivalent to a 13 story climb over 1/4 mile.
Not that we minded. For prison grounds, it sure was gorgeous!
Once we got up to the cellhouse, we got headphones for the audio tour. Trenton wanted his own pair too.
The kids loved looking into the cells.
And of course had to go into every cell that was open.
And Trenton was just fascinated with the fact that everyone got their own potty! He had to sit on every one that he could!
He saw one toilet that looked like it had a sledgehammer taken to it, and is still talking about it!
After making our way through most of the cellhouse, we headed out back.
These people might have been in prison, but boy did they have a nice view. At least those who were on good enough behavior to earn the privilege of going outside.

After our walk down the hill and a short ride on the boat back to the city, we walked down to Fisherman’s Wharf where we met up with a cousin of mine who lives in San Francisco along with one of her friends for lunch. It was great getting to catch up with her!
On our way out of town, I told Jarrod that there was one more thing I wanted to see. Traffic was a mess, but he obliged.
And I got to see the Tanner residence!
What a great day!
Hmmm, wonder what I should check off of my California bucket list next???

I would love to go there! My brother and his family went there this weekend.
We visited San Fran on one of our PCS travels. Alcatraz was so neat...but I totally missed out on seeing the Tanner residence. Sweet! I'm glad your family had a good time.
How cool is that?! Great pictures! Your kids are beautiful!
This is still something I want to check off the bucket list!
I love Alcatraz and I am so glad I was able to go there twice while I was living in Cali. It really is eye opening to be on the rock.
Looks like you were able to get some good weather too.
what a fun outing. i will have to consider visiting alcatraz on my next visit to sf.
[hopped over from SITs.]
I've always wanted to go there!! I keep telling Peter we need to drive down while we are stationed here so we can see SF and the redwoods in northern Cali!
Monterey and Alcatraz are both on my list of places to visit. Your pictures are fantastic! Looks like a great time.
