The First Day of School–The Real Story

It was back to school for Trenton and Charlotte today!

Trenton is in first grade this year and Charlotte is in kindergarten.

I wrote the sappy “my kid is going to kindergarten” post on my Facebook page last week (along with a cute video).

So today I’m giving y’all the non-sappy real story version of how our first day went.

I’ll start the story off with yesterday evening when I took first day of school pictures.  Yep, you read that right.  I take these pictures the evening before school because I know the morning of is probably going to be crazy.

Taking pictures last night definitely helped out this morning.  We’ve been working with Trenton on tying his shoelaces, and yesterday it finally clicked!  But that meant that he wanted to do it all by himself this morning and it was a bit slow.

I had lunches, snacks, and water bottles prepped and ready to go though, so even with shoes taking a little longer than normal, we were still able to get out the door and out to the bus stop five minutes early.

But the bus was apparently earlier than we were!

Thankfully I had already planned on going up to the school to snap some pictures there and to see the kids walk off into the school with their classes.  Yes, I’m totally that mom!

We got to school, and I wanted to get a picture of Trenton and Charlotte together.  I had them all set up and noticed that Charlotte didn’t have her backpack on.  She had forgotten it in the car, so back to the car we marched to get it.  Charlotte grabbed her backpack, and as she came past me and I turned to close the car door, the camera that I had on my shoulder bonked her in the head.

So this is how the picture of Trenton and Charlotte together turned out.

And when I took Charlotte up to where her class was lined up, her teacher came over to give her a hug and comfort her.  I had to explain that Charlotte really was excited about kindergarten, but mom-of-the-year had just whopped her in the head with the camera.

Thankfully she recovered quickly, and was ready to march off into the school with the rest of her classmates!

I couldn’t wait to hear how the first day of school went when the kids got home.  They came bolting off the bus down the sidewalk to where I was.  They both had great days and can’t wait to go back tomorrow.  What more could a mom ask for?

Here’s to what will hopefully be a fabulous school year!

Love the honest update.

And keeping it real - I've totally bonked both my kids with my camera before. Multiple times.
